Concerned scholars create website to clarify ‘comfort women’ issue

More than a few politicians, such as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto, have pushed, now or in the past, for a revision of then Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono’s 1993 statement on the “comfort women,” who were forced into prostitution by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. These politicians are trying to deny that the Japanese government was responsible, and the basis they cite for their argument is that there is no evidence proving that the women were “taken through violence or coercion (i.e., abducted) by military or government authorities” when recruited.
