It is astounding that in the 21st century members of the Japanese government and its national broadcaster do not understand the connection between their statements on the Comfort Women and the global push to improve the position of women. The type of statements being made are an affront to women\u2019s dignity and undermine the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council on the need to eliminate violence against women in times of armed conflict. As a modern democracy with aspirations to be viewed as a global leader Japan should be supporting the work of the United Nations rather than engaging in behaviour that would suggest it supports the type of activities that have been repeatedly condemned by the Human Rights Council and the International Criminal Court.<\/p>\n
